Charlotte

Yet another bird has decided to reproduce at work - this time a Dunnock

This time Matt found them and so he had the naming rights. He decided that as there will probably be more we should use the system of naming them that is used with hurricanes, going through the alphabet! After 5 seconds of thought, he decided that after Bridget the mother should be named Charlotte! (don't ask me why, it was his idea after all)

The parents are doing a good job, still 3 alive and they have cool wee fluffy mohawks! The nest is in a tree in a pot, but it was getting pretty windy on Saturday avo and it nearly blew over, so with gale force winds on their way I decided to prop it up with big bricks to keep it standing!

Conference preperation

The time has nearly come for me to present my thesis study at a real science conference!

I went along last year, but didn't have to present anything - this year I'm giving a 30 min powerpoint and putting up a poster too...

If you're interested the poster is a good way of getting an extreme summary of my thesis, download it here

Makara Trip

On Sunday, after waffles, we took the dogs to Makara. It's up by the wind farm which I was working at last week, but this time I could get close without having to agree not to take photos!! :D

iphoned GPS route:

View Makara trip in a larger map

From the top of the walk you get a good view of lots of the turbines

We could get pretty close to them too, they really are MASSIVE!
The blades are 80m long and the tower is 120m high. EJ and I worked out the other day that the tips of the blades were traveling at 450kmph! (it was a lot more windy)

Our view up at the Gun Emplacements

You could see Mana and Kapiti in the distance too which was awesome

Jake is very much a black lab, he can't get enough of the water
Jake had a good swim with me, although he kept trying to climb onto me which didn't let me have a very relaxing snorkel!
Then as I got dry he decided to try and dig up rocks under the water... he's special!

Terrible frame but I still think this photo is cool!

Nick and Fenn watched us from the beach (on the left)
The swimmers warm up in the sun :)
That was my third swim in the sea in 8 days - Summer really is coming!

ooooooo aaaahhhh

It's bonfire night!

This time last year (well in 12 hours actually) I was in the UK, I remember I was flying back down south from Scotland and seeing all of the fireworks from the plane... very cool!
This year Nick and I went to watch the ones in the Wellington harbour which they send off from two barges and play music to...

Nick got some good pics...

And I got an OK video...

Then we spend 20 mins trying to get out of town (HEAPS of traffic) and get Nick back to work... At least the Avatar is nearly over, w00000t!

The awesomeness that is Vimeo

Are you bored with the crap quality (both in bitrate and the shitness of content) of youtube?!
Well then I have the site for you - Vimeo.

It's my new #1 thing to do when I want to waste time!

The short films on this site, I call them that on purpose, are made with care (not a cellphone when drunk) and it now seems that without a backing track, no video quite lives up to it's potential!

Here is one of my new favs - the song has always been a good one and it's a pleasure to watch! (and somehow reminds me of the Sandworms of Arrakis!)

Strawberry Swing from Matt Clark on Vimeo.

With my new camera I will now have some good movie making goals to aim for. I won't be able to get close to some like this other good one, but I'll try!

Boat trip to Kapiti

Yesterday Nick & I were planning to do the Rimutaka Incline on bikes, but my flatties asked if we wanted to join them on a boat trip - how could we refuse?!

After a few waffles (it was Waffle Sunday after all) we headed out towards the coast

Destination: the south end of Kapiti Island

Chris is starting to look VERY pregnant, however Nick's new wideangle lens seems to distort my head and diminish her stomach :P
The main aim of the trip was to get Paua but Nick and I were just along for the ride and the snorkel
Richard was down from Aucks and he and (flattie) Nick had been on a massive 4 day hunting trip. Therefor he decided to 'make his own kind of music' wearing a mix of blase camo fleece, wetsuit and of course the obligatory crocs... *shudder*

Pulling the boat out

We reached the south end of the island after a not-too-bumpy ride

Nick's scared of the camera but I got us both in a cool reflective one :P

ooOOOoo

Video of most of it: (Richard's talking about one of the huts they stayed in on their hunting trip)

Kapiti Dive Trip from PushToCharge on Vimeo.

The way back was rather more bumpy cause the wind was up a bit. I was at the front and I think I got more salt water in my face on the 15 min motor back to the shore than the whole time I was actually under the water! Very 'refreshing' but I was happy to get back to dry land!

She's gone!

Well Bridget, and her last chick, have left the nest. Only one poo remains!

I also saw this TINY stick insect, very cute :)
